The Library also offers the Reese J. Moses-Scallions Genealogy Room. Miss Reese was a dedicated volunteer at the library for over 15 years. The room was renamed in her honor in 2002. Since Miss Reese's death, in 2005, we have had four very dedicated volunteers to help fill the void left by Miss Reese. These volunteers are: Harriet Coburn (hcgenie1@bellsouth.net); Debbie Sterbinsky (dsgenie2@bellsouth.net); Tine Gray (tggenie3@bellsouth.net); and Jim Ackerman (jagenie4@bellsouth.net) They will be happy to assist you with your genealogical research.
The first library service in Brownsville began in 1912, with the Carnegie library located at 121 W. Main Street. The library bore the Carnegie name until 1957, when it joined the state's Regional Program. It then became known as the Brownsville-Haywood County Library. When the Brownsville-Haywood County Library began bulging at the seams, it was noted that the community needed a larger library. Local philanthropist, Mr. Dick Ross, came forward to help build a new library. The Elma Ross Public Library, now located at 1011 E. Main St., was dedicated on May 5, 2002. We are very proud of our library and also have a very active "Friends of the Library" organization.
The Elma Ross Public Library is a member of the Forked Deer Regional Library System, a subsidiary of the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
